Women Helping Women: Spark Your Purpose

For many of us in tech, we’re lucky to be able to work on world-changing initiatives that truly change lives. Our Comet Competition initiative here at Ingram Micro is just one example. But, how often do each of us stop and think, “How can I positively impact the lives of those right next to me?” And now, it's even more important to support each other in these uncertain times.

Finding purpose in your work is what makes you feel good at the end of the day. Your own success feels good, but it’s usually not as fulfilling as helping others. Helping others to be successful drives meaning that lasts.

For women in tech, from entry-level positions to powerful senior executive roles, there is one thing we all have in common: ambition. But, ambition means different things for different women. For many, they’re looking to hear advice from other women on how they’ve risen, so they can emulate those they admire. For others, they’re striving to overcome the unique challenges that being a woman in tech presents (no need to list these; you already know).

When you can help someone spark a passion within themselves and to contribute to someone else’s success, to give one small tip or word of encouragement that goes a long way with the recipient—that’s purposeful.

With March being Women’s History Month, it’s a great reminder for all of us to be purposeful with our interactions. It’s the right time to connect women with other leaders, ideas and inspiration. To give someone a little push to step outside their comfort zone and achieve their own definition of success just requires thinking intentionally and making the decision to follow through and take a small action.

There are many people out there who have achieved a high level of success in their careers and now have an increased, ongoing focus on lifting women up. Thank you to those people—to the advocates, teachers, supporters, helpers, inspirers, cheerleaders and “tell-it-to-me-straight-ers.”

Be that type of person this month. You may be surprised when you walk away feeling you received more than you gave.
